GRE Syllabus 2018: ETS – Educational Testing Service, the GRE exam conducting body has prescribed two sets of GRE 2018 Syllabus as the exam is conducted in two formats; GRE General Test and GRE Subject Test.

GRE Exam Syllabus

The GRE Syllabus 2018 is different for both General GRE and Subject GRE tests. While the GRE General test measures a candidate reasoning ability, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking and writing skills, the GRE Subject Test evaluates the candidate expertise in fields like Biology, Literature, Mathematics, amongst others, the difference between the formats is reflected in the GRE test pattern. Both the tests use different yardsticks to measure the candidate’s proficiency. While the GRE general test is scored on a scale of 130-170, the subjects tests are scored on a 200-990 scale. According to the GRE syllabus 2018, the General GRE test format covers three segments. They are:

1. Verbal Reasoning
2. Quantitative Reasoning
3. Analytical Writing

GRE Exam Syllabus 2018 – Verbal Reasoning:

The verbal reasoning section consists of – Reading Comprehension, Text Completion and Sentence Equivalence. As per the GRE syllabus 2018, the Verbal Reasoning section measures a candidate’s ability to:

– Analyze and conclude, understand and add value to imperfect information; identify the author’s perception;

– Identify points that are vital and distinguish between points;
– Understand and summarise a text’s structure;
– Understand the specified words, sentences and entire texts; ability to focus on the meaning of the entire sentence
– Understand the relationships between theories and words.

GRE Syllabus 2018 – Quantitative Reasoning

The Quantitative Reasoning section of GRE test evaluates a candidate’s ability to:

– Understand and analyze information
– Solve problems using models
– Interpret quantitative information
– Apply basic mathematical skills and theories of Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry and Data Interpretation.

GRE Syllabus 2018 – Analytical Writing

The Analytical Writing section of GRE evaluates a candidate’s ability to:

– Articulate ideas effectively and with clarity
– Support ideas with examples and relevant reasons
– Examine claims and accompanying evidence
– Sustain a well-focused, coherent discussion
